Petrocollapse: Social Isolation or Solidarity?

May 6, 2006 conference in Washington, DC

Let us ask ourselves: will we survive Peak Oil only by going through "economic doom" and worse, or as an ultimately positive transformation for our species on our fragile planet? Culture change and sustainable post-petroleum living can be our future.

The first Petrocollapse Conference was held in New York City on October 5, 2005. It was the brainchild of Andrew McKillop, author of The Final Energy Crisis. His idea was to have key peak oil experts present their knowledge to the public. Our speakers in DC, as in Manhattan, are tremendous authorities offering a wide range of expertise. The audience is encouraged to be participants at the conference, and one can expect to come away well informed, better connected and hopeful of positive action for these interesting times.

Jan Lundberg, conference Organizer, has given many presentations on petrocollapse around the country via AMTRAK. Large crowds and positive attitudes manifest themselves at such talks as the public learns is critical issues -- without much help from the corporate media or academia. In addition to drawing upon his oil industry experience, Jan offers his well-known song Have a Global Warming Day with his guitar accompaniment, and he shows documentary films such as on Cuba's organic farming revolution and on the massive pollution from plastics in the world's oceans.

Jenna Orkin, conference Moderator, after co-founding World Trade Center Environmental Organization, spent much time "lobbying" members of the U.S. Congress to consider peak oil. She urged them to read reports by Michael Ruppert of From The Wilderness, by Jan Lundberg, and especially the speeches on peak oil by Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (Republican of Maryland) that he makes in the U.S. House of Representatives. It was Ms. Orkin's experience with this "lobbying" and outreach to news media that helped prompt her to join the effort to make these conferences a reality.

Culture Change as a group flowed from the activities of the Alliance for a Paving Moratorium, Auto-Free Times magazine, and the Sustainable Energy Institute founded in 1988. Recent projects have included the campaign to enact municipal plastic-bag fee ordinances at the supermarket level.

Spreading the word on petrocollapse and reducing present petroleum use is an urgent cause that must benefit from citizen concern at the grass roots level. Fortunately, a wide spectrum of participants is again anticipated at the DC conference.. "If the people lead, the leaders will follow." Your registration and contribution, in whatever form, would be appreciated. Register now to assure a ticket. Learn about our speakers at the Speakers Page.

Thank You,
Jan Lundberg
